Taxi Drivers Accused of Causing Nuisance Near Liverpool Airport as Car Vandalism Sparks Anger

Residents living close to Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) say their street has become overrun with taxis, private hire vehicles, and holidaymakers trying to dodge airport parking fees – and tensions are now boiling over.

Hale Road Parking Row

Hale Road in Speke, just minutes from the airport terminal, has become a hotspot for drivers looking for a free place to wait or park. Locals claim the area is plagued by noise from cars pulling up at all hours, with doors slamming and horns beeping, while some vehicles are even being left for days at a time.

The situation escalated over the weekend when two cars – a white Hyundai and a blue Volvo – were found with smashed windows and slashed tyres. Both had reportedly been parked on the street for several days.

One resident told reporters:

“It happens all the time. People drop off or pick up throughout the day and night. Sometimes they even block our driveway. We understand people want to save money, but you’re spending £300 on a holiday and don’t want to pay £6 for parking? It’s not fair on us.”

Police and Council Response

Merseyside Police confirmed they are aware of the ongoing issues. Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Michelle Ingram said the force has set up a joint working group with Liverpool City Council and JLA to look at long-term solutions, including potential traffic control measures.

She added:

“We are aware of vehicles being damaged in the area and the additional problems with some taxi drivers causing a nuisance to residents and the wider community. Extra high-visibility patrols have been requested, particularly at night.”

Liverpool City Council previously reviewed the area in 2022, promising to assess road safety improvements and traffic collision data. DM News has approached the council for an update.

Airport Parking Charges at the Heart of the Dispute

JLA charges £6 for up to 10 minutes at its express drop-off zone and £10 for 20 minutes. Blue Badge holders can access up to 40 minutes free of charge, while motorbikes can park for free in designated areas.

An airport spokesperson said:

“We are looking at ways to deter passengers from being dropped off and picked up on surrounding roads, which causes disruption and nuisance to local residents at all hours.”

Residents argue that while they sympathise with passengers trying to save money, the impact on the community is becoming unbearable. Some locals also highlighted that there is a bus route from Hale Road directly into the airport, which could reduce reliance on car drop-offs.

Ongoing Investigation

Police have urged anyone with information about the recent spate of car damage to come forward. Reports can be made via Merseyside Police social media (@MerPolCC on X and Facebook), the official website, or by calling 101. Information can also be shared anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
