School Bus Driver Arrested After Failing Drug Test in Southport

A school bus driver has been arrested in Southport after being stopped by police for speeding in a 20mph zone while en route to collect children.

Merseyside Police said the vehicle was sighted travelling in excess of the speed limit in the Southport area. Officers from the force’s Matrix unit stopped the bus and carried out a roadside drug test on the driver, which returned a positive result.

The driver was immediately arrested, and the bus was prevented from continuing its journey to collect pupils. Police confirmed no children were on board at the time of the stop.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said:

“This bus was sighted at excess speed in a 20 mph zone on route to pick up children from a school in the Southport area. The driver failed the roadside drug test and was arrested.”

The incident has raised serious concerns around pupil safety and driver vetting procedures, with many parents expressing relief that the driver was stopped before any children were placed at risk.

Police confirmed that the driver remains in custody while further enquiries are carried out.
