London’s Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 was evacuated yesterday evening (8 September 2025) after fears of a hazardous materials incident.
Emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service, were called to the check-in area at around 5pm following reports of a potential chemical hazard.
Passengers Evacuated and Assessed
As a precaution, the entire check-in zone of Terminal 4 was cleared, with passengers told not to travel to that terminal while the incident was ongoing.
Paramedics assessed around 20 people at the scene, with one person taken to hospital. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

No Hazard Found
Following a thorough investigation, emergency crews confirmed that no hazardous or adverse substances were detected. Some officials suggested the situation may have been triggered by “mass hysteria,” though the exact cause remains under review.
Terminal Reopened After Three Hours
By around 8pm, Terminal 4 was deemed safe and reopened to the public. Heathrow issued a statement apologising for the disruption and thanking passengers for their patience, saying:
“The safety and security of our passengers and colleagues is our number one priority.”
Other Heathrow terminals remained operational throughout the incident, though some flights faced delays.
Impact on Travellers
While the scare caused temporary disruption to check-in and boarding at Terminal 4, the swift response of emergency services meant wider airport operations were not heavily affected. Passengers are advised to always check flight updates directly with their airline during any unexpected airport closures.
