A multi-agency crackdown on taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs) in Chester has led to a number of vehicles being taken off the road, as authorities work to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance.
The operation, codenamed Operation Recordings, was carried out on Friday 11 July by Cheshire Police’s Chester Beat Management Team and the Special Constabulary. In total, 53 vehicles were stopped during the targeted checks, with several failing to meet the required standards.
The initiative was supported by licensing teams from Cheshire West and Chester Council, as well as Flintshire and Wolverhampton councils, reflecting a collaborative approach to improving standards across the region.
Among the key outcomes:
- Three taxis were immediately prohibited from further use due to safety defects.
- Seven rectification notices were issued, requiring faults to be fixed before vehicles can return to service.
- One driver received a Traffic Offence Report (TOR) for having defective tyres, a potentially dangerous issue.
- Twelve drivers were issued with advice after failing to display legally required ‘no smoking’ signs inside their vehicles.
Inspector James Wilson of Cheshire Police stressed the importance of such enforcement efforts, stating:
“Countless people use taxis to get around Chester, and this is why we work alongside our partner agencies to make sure the vehicles and drivers transporting these individuals are correctly licensed and compliant.”
He added that taxi and PHV drivers must meet strict requirements, including having a roadworthy vehicle, displaying a valid driver ID badge, and ensuring that items such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and ‘no smoking’ signage are clearly visible.
The operation sends a clear message that the safety of passengers and road users is a top priority, and non-compliance will not be tolerated.
