Two Chester Taxi Licences Suspended After Vehicles Found in “Dangerous Condition”

Cheshire Police has confirmed that two taxi licences were suspended following a weekend enforcement operation in Chester, after vehicles were found to be in a dangerous condition.

The operation, run jointly with Cheshire West and Chester Council, saw 12 taxis stopped and checked at the roadside. Alongside the two suspensions, officers issued one Traffic Offence Report, and several drivers were warned about tyre tread depth — a reminder that the legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, with fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre for falling short.

It’s a notably sharper outcome than the last major sweep in the area. Back in April, a similar weekend operation checked over 400 taxis across Chester and resulted only in warning notices for issues like faulty brake lights and incorrectly displayed number plates — no suspensions at all. This time, with vehicles actually being pulled from the road on safety grounds, it’s a clear step up in enforcement intensity.

Cheshire Police has been running these checks regularly in partnership with licensing teams from neighbouring authorities, reflecting a broader push across the region to keep tabs on vehicle condition and cross-border licensing compliance. For drivers, it’s a straightforward reminder: regular checks on tyres, lights and general roadworthiness aren’t optional extras — they’re what keeps a licence valid.
