The Cambourne to Cambridge guided busway scheme has been authorised by the Secretary of State, covering the route and associated infrastructure across the A428 and A1303 corridor.
The Department for Transport issued its decision on 8 September 2026 to make the Cambourne to Cambridge Transport and Works Act Order 2026, with modifications. The Secretary of State also granted deemed planning permission for the project, subject to conditions.
The approval covers a guided busway and a parallel route for walking, cycling and wheeling between Cambourne and Cambridge. The intended alignment runs through or serves the Bourn Airfield development, Hardwick, Coton and the Cambridge West area.
A travel hub at Scotland Farm, south of Dry Drayton near the A428, is also authorised. Greater Cambridge Partnership has said the hub will provide 2,000 spaces and is intended as an interchange where motorists can transfer to bus travel before continuing towards Cambridge.
The order gives powers needed for the scheme, including compulsory acquisition of land, stopping up or diverting highways, carrying out works in highways, and providing replacement land where open space is affected.

Cambridgeshire County Council will deliver the route on behalf of the Greater Cambridge Partnership. The decision letter says the Secretary of State was satisfied that City Deal funding and other funding were sufficient and would not prevent delivery.
The authorisation does not mean the busway is open or that construction has started. Development must begin no later than three years after the order comes into force.
Conditions attached to the order and deemed planning permission require further detail and consultation on mitigation involving protected species, flooding and heritage matters. Co-ordination will also be required where the project interfaces with safeguarded land for East West Rail.
A Transport and Works Act order is the authorisation route used for schemes including guided busways. It allows the Secretary of State to make, amend or reject an order after considering representations.
There remains a challenge period. An aggrieved person may challenge the order in the High Court within six weeks beginning on the day after notice of the determination is published.
