NATS said its operations were stable at 12:55 on 9 September, while airlines and airports continued to recover from disruption linked to a flight-processing system issue the previous day.
The organisation said its immediate focus was safely managing flights on 9 September. It was also continuing to work with airlines and airports as they dealt with the operational effects of the incident and worked through the recovery.
NATS apologised to passengers, airlines and airports affected by the system issue on 8 September. The organisation said it would conduct a full investigation to establish what happened and identify any further action that might be needed.
NATS had identified the fault on 8 September as being in its flight-processing system. Its initial statement said the issue was disrupting some flight departures. Flights continued to depart during the incident, and UK airspace remained open.

NATS implemented a fix during the afternoon of 8 September. It later said the system issue had been resolved by the evening and that normal operations had resumed. The resolution of the technical issue did not immediately end the wider operational impact, because NATS said clearing the resulting flight backlog would take time.
The 9 September update therefore combined a report of stable operations with a continuing recovery effort. NATS said it remained in contact with airlines and airports while disruption was being cleared, rather than stating that all effects had already ended.
The recovery statement did not identify the root cause of the fault or set a timetable for the investigation. It also did not provide a further deadline for clearing the backlog. The investigation is intended to establish what happened and whether additional action is required.
NATS’s update followed the technical incident on 8 September and focused on safe management of flights and recovery on 9 September. No further explanation of the fault was given in the information released with the stability update.
