Murder Investigation Launched After Woman’s Body Found in Liverpool’s Stanley Park

A murder investigation has been launched after the body of an unidentified elderly woman was discovered in Stanley Park in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police were contacted by a member of the public at approximately 5.25pm on Friday, 28 August after the woman’s body was found in the park’s walled garden.

Detectives have now confirmed that the death is being investigated as murder.

Police believe the woman’s body could have been at the location for a number of weeks before it was discovered.

Despite carrying out a number of enquiries, officers have not yet been able to establish her identity or notify her next of kin.

Police have therefore released a description in the hope that members of the public can help identify her.

The woman is described as white, aged in her 70s, approximately 5ft 2in tall and of small build.

She had strawberry-blonde hair and was wearing what police have described as a distinctive cerise-pink Nike T-shirt when her body was discovered.

A post-mortem examination took place on Saturday, 29 August.

Merseyside Police said the results are being withheld for investigative reasons.

Officers are carrying out CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries as detectives work to establish the woman’s identity and determine what happened to her.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said officers have examined missing-person reports across Merseyside and the wider area but have so far been unable to identify the woman.

Detectives are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who recognises the description released by police.

They are also appealing to people who have visited Stanley Park during recent days or weeks.

Walkers and dog walkers who have been in or around the walled garden are being asked to consider whether they noticed anything unusual or suspicious.

A police cordon remains in place inside Stanley Park while the investigation continues.

A mobile police station is also being deployed in the vicinity of the park on Sunday to allow members of the community to speak directly with officers.

Stanley Park is one of Liverpool’s best-known public parks and sits between Anfield and Everton’s former Goodison Park stadium.

The possibility that the woman’s body remained undiscovered for several weeks has become an important element of the police investigation as detectives attempt to reconstruct the period before she was found.

Police have not publicly disclosed the woman’s cause of death.

No arrests have been announced in connection with the murder investigation at the time of publication.

Anyone with information about the woman’s identity or circumstances surrounding her death is being urged to contact Merseyside Police and quote reference 26000706383.

Information, photographs or video can also be provided through the police Major Incident Public Portal, while information can be given anonymously through Crimestoppers.
