Holidaymakers travelling to one of the UK’s busiest airports are being encouraged to leave their cars at home this month.
London Luton Airport (LLA) is funding free bus travel to the terminal throughout August, covering locations across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, in a bid to reduce congestion and help families save money. The “Fly and Ride” scheme lets adult passengers travel free on a range of Arriva and Stagecoach routes simply by showing a valid boarding pass for an LLA flight during August to the driver, with some services running as often as every seven minutes and dropping passengers directly outside the terminal door.
The initiative complements the Department for Transport’s existing free summer bus scheme for children aged 5 to 15, meaning many families could reach the airport at no cost at all this month. It comes as LLA prepares for its busiest August on record, with passenger numbers expected to reach 1.9 million — a 5% increase on last year.
Alberto Martin, chief executive of LLA, said: “This is a fantastic initiative and a great example of how we continually look to extend our simple and friendly passenger experience far beyond the terminal doors… this initiative demonstrates our commitment to reinvesting in transport options that benefit both our passengers and the communities we serve.”
