Foil Helium Balloon Blamed for Fire That Destroyed Homes in Norfolk

A foil-coated helium balloon coming into contact with overhead power lines has been identified as the most likely cause of a devastating fire that spread from a field to neighbouring homes in Norfolk.

The blaze broke out in Kenninghall, near Diss, on Sunday, 9 August and rapidly spread across dry ground before reaching properties in the village.

Seven fire engines and a water carrier were deployed as firefighters battled to prevent the flames spreading further.

Three homes were affected by the fire, with two bungalows left devastated by the blaze.

Despite the extensive damage, nobody was reported injured.

UK Power Networks has now confirmed that an independent forensic investigation has examined how the fire started.

The investigation concluded that the most likely cause was a third-party foil-coated helium balloon coming into contact with an overhead electricity line.

According to the electricity network operator, contact between the balloon and the line created an electrical arc.

The balloon then ignited and fell into the field below during dry and windy conditions, where the fire was able to spread.

UK Power Networks said investigators found no faults or other problems with its electricity equipment.

The company’s network was de-energised after the fire service requested assistance so emergency crews could work safely around the affected power infrastructure.

The findings provide an explanation for a fire that caused substantial damage to families living close to the field.

One affected resident told the BBC that her home of 12 years had been destroyed along with personal belongings and family memories.

UK Power Networks described an incident of this kind as rare but said its thoughts remained with the families whose homes were affected.

Foil balloons can present a particular risk around electricity infrastructure because their metallic coating is capable of conducting electricity.

When one comes into contact with overhead lines or electrical equipment, electricity can arc through the surrounding air and potentially generate enough heat or sparks to start a fire.

The Kenninghall incident is not the first UK fire this summer to have been linked to a foil balloon.

In July, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said a children’s balloon coming into contact with a pylon was believed to have caused sparks that started a fire in a farmer’s field near Tithby.

That incident also caused a brief interruption to electricity supplies affecting hundreds of customers.

Following the Nottinghamshire fire, the fire service warned people never to intentionally release helium balloons and advised that balloons should be deflated before being disposed of.

The newly confirmed cause of the Kenninghall blaze demonstrates how an apparently harmless object can have serious consequences when it reaches high-voltage electricity infrastructure, particularly during periods of dry weather when grass and vegetation can ignite and spread fire quickly.
