East Midlands Railway has extended its Digital Pay As You Go ticketing trial by a further 12 months, keeping the GPS-based app scheme available on selected journeys between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham.
The trial allows participants to travel within the designated area without choosing and buying a conventional ticket in advance. The EMR app uses GPS technology to track a customer’s journey and automatically calculate the fare.
EMR announced the extension on 4 September after the scheme recorded 27,009 pay-as-you-go journeys. A total of 1,492 customers have taken part since the trial was launched.

The operator said the app has received a customer satisfaction score of 4.4 out of five during the trial.
Digital Pay As You Go remains a limited trial rather than a network-wide change to ticketing across the East Midlands. It applies only to selected journeys on the Leicester, Derby and Nottingham route area.
The scheme forms part of a wider Department for Transport-supported programme testing more flexible rail ticketing options.
EMR said there is no cap on the number of people who can join during the extended trial and is encouraging regular users of the three-city route to sign up.
