Durham Man Jailed After Violent Racially Aggravated Attack on Taxi Driver (Video Embedded)

A shocking video released by Durham Constabulary has highlighted the dangers faced by transport workers after a passenger was caught on camera launching a brutal and unprovoked attack on a taxi driver.

The incident took place in December of last year when the driver picked up Jonathan Olley in Durham City. Olley requested a journey to West Cornforth, but the trip quickly turned into a nightmare for the driver. Dashcam footage from inside the vehicle captured the moment Olley began shouting racial slurs before leaning forward and punching the driver repeatedly in the side of the head.

Despite the sudden violence and the distraction of the physical assault, the driver managed to maintain control of the vehicle and eventually fled to safety to call for help.

Police arrested Olley shortly after the incident. Following a thorough investigation by Durham Constabulary, the case was brought before the courts where the severity of the hate crime was addressed. Olley was recently sentenced to a term of imprisonment for his actions, sending a clear message that violence and racial abuse against service workers will not be tolerated.

Local authorities have praised the driver for his bravery and quick thinking during the terrifying ordeal. The footage, which has since been shared as a Facebook Reel to raise awareness, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and legal protections for those working in the UK’s transport sector.
