Debt-Ridden Liverpool Cabbie Jailed After Cocaine Found Between His Legs

A Liverpool taxi driver who turned to dealing class A drugs to clear his debts has been jailed for 28 months after police caught him with cocaine held between his legs in the city centre.

Warren Childs, a 45-year-old father of three from West Derby, had built up around £30,000 in debt, including a sudden £4,500 bill to get his Mercedes taxi roadworthy and an £8,000 tax debt. The former merchant navy veteran, who had served 23 years at sea, started dealing roughly a month before his arrest, text messages on his phone revealed.

During a stop on Renshaw Street, officers spotted Childs with his hands between his legs. He then handed over a fistful of cash from one hand and wraps of high-purity cocaine from the other. A later search of his car and home turned up more cocaine and a small bag of cannabis, worth up to £2,160 in total, along with £1,270 in cash.

His defence barrister described the situation as a complete nightmare brought on by desperation and exhaustion, saying Childs had been working all the hours he could but still could not make enough money legitimately. The court heard he had since turned his life around, working in a glazing business, and was said to have shown deep remorse.

It’s a hard story, and the financial pressures behind it will be familiar to a lot of drivers — unexpected repair bills, tax demands and the grind of long hours for thin margins. But the outcome is a sobering reminder that there’s no shortcut out of that pressure that doesn’t carry its own, far heavier cost.
