💬 Why Is Uber Introducing Cash?

Uber says the change is about accessibility and inclusivity:

“Some riders still do not use the Uber app because they prefer using cash or don’t have a UK bank card. By allowing payments in cash, we can bring new riders to the Uber app, creating more earnings opportunities for you.”

📅 When Does It Start?

The new cash payment option goes live on Thursday 1st May. All drivers will be automatically opted in, but you’ll be able to opt out via the app’s Preferences section.

🔍 What You Need to Know as a Driver

Uber has confirmed several key points for drivers regarding cash trips:

  • You can opt-out: If you don’t want to accept cash, you can opt-out anytime via the Driver app.
  • Change isn’t necessary: If you don’t have the correct change, you can issue the difference as Uber credits to the rider, deducted later from your balance.
  • Earnings are protected: If a rider doesn’t pay or underpays, Uber will pay you the missing amount directly.
  • Usage limits apply: There’s a cap on how many times you can use the “credit” feature for giving change with Uber credits.

🚗 How the App Will Look & Work

Cash-specific features in the app include:

  • Trip offer card: You’ll see “Cash payment” clearly marked so you know in advance.
  • Collecting cash: After a trip, tap “Collect cash” to confirm the amount owed. You can enter the amount received manually if different.
  • Trip receipts: The system shows how much cash you collected and how much you were owed.
  • Weekly balance: Cash shows as a negative figure in your Uber driver payout summary.

🛡️ Safety Advice from Uber

Uber has advised drivers to:

  • Avoid arguments with riders about payment – encourage switching to digital payment instead.
  • Limit how much cash you carry.
  • Deposit cash regularly and avoid keeping it visible in the vehicle.
