Two Bradford-licensed private-hire drivers and vehicles were suspended during a joint night-time licensing operation in Barnsley town centre, Barnsley Council has reported.
The suspensions were imposed by Bradford Licensing Officers over breaches of licence conditions concerning signage and accident damage to vehicles. Barnsley’s report does not identify the drivers or vehicles, provide further details about the accident damage, or confirm how long the suspensions lasted or their subsequent outcome.
The proactive static operation took place on 18 July 2026 and focused on drivers and vehicles working in Barnsley’s night-time economy. Barnsley Council Licensing Enforcement Officers were joined by South Yorkshire Police and licensing officers from Bradford and Wolverhampton councils.
A total of 43 drivers and vehicles were stopped and inspected. Officers checked 15 Barnsley-licensed hackney carriages and four Barnsley-licensed private-hire vehicles and drivers.

One Barnsley private-hire driver was issued with a written warning after failing to display an interior licence plate. The council said every other Barnsley driver and vehicle inspected during the operation was compliant.
The remaining 28 checks involved vehicles and drivers licensed by other authorities. These included seven licensed by Wakefield, six by Kirklees, five by Bradford, two by Leeds, and one each from Sheffield, Chesterfield, Wolverhampton and Rotherham.
The operation followed concerns raised by Barnsley’s Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Associations at Trade Liaison Meetings about the number of vehicles licensed outside the borough working in the town centre.
Barnsley says its licensing officers treat vehicle and driver non-compliance as a public-safety concern regardless of the authority that issued the licence. The council has said enforcement operations will continue on both a proactive and reactive basis.
The update was prepared for Barnsley Council’s Licensing Regulatory Board meeting on 2 September 2026. The council notes that the underlying Enforcement Officer Reports contain exempt information and are not available for public inspection.
