Rother District Council Cabinet is due to consider a proposed 10% increase to maximum hackney-carriage fares, including waiting-time charges, at its meeting on 14 September 2026.
The officer recommendation is for Cabinet to vary the district’s maximum fare table following a statutory consultation. The consultation received objections, according to the report.
If approved, the changes would increase the standard daytime minimum fare from £3.30 to £3.70. The additional-passenger charge would also rise from 30p to 40p.
The proposals also include moving the start of the standard night tariff from 23:00 to midnight. Waiting-time charges would be included in the proposed 10% tariff increase.

Rother District Council sets the maximum fares for hackney carriages licensed by the district. Drivers can charge less than the approved maximum, but their meters must be calibrated to the council-approved fare tariff.
The council’s previous maximum fare table took effect in April 2023. The report states that 103 hackney-carriage owners were consulted, with eight responses received.
The revised fare card would take effect in October 2026 if Cabinet approves the recommendation. However, the documents contain two different proposed commencement dates: the fare card is marked as effective from 5 October, while the report conclusion refers to 6 October.
The report therefore contains a discrepancy over the proposed effective date.
