GMB has urged Transport for London and the UK Government to create a plan to support taxi and private-hire drivers ahead of Uber’s planned robotaxi rollout in London.
The union said the rollout would be premature without measures to protect drivers who could be affected by the transition to driverless services.
GMB also called for operators to be held accountable for disruption caused by driverless services, saying the impact on people working as drivers should be addressed before driverless services are expanded.

The intervention focuses on the implications for the large number of people working as drivers.
At its annual congress in June 2026, GMB previously said that more than 300,000 taxi and private-hire driving jobs could be at risk from driverless taxis. That estimate was made before the union’s latest call for a support plan around Uber’s London plans.
Uber has been developing autonomous-rides services in London, while GMB’s latest position is that protections for affected drivers should be agreed before any wider expansion of driverless operations.
