The Environment Agency is investigating three illegal waste sites in the North-East after almost 3,500 tonnes of shredded household waste were found across locations in Peterlee, Hartlepool and Callerton.
The sites were identified following reports received over recent weeks. All three have now been shut down, with concrete blocks installed to prevent further access while the investigation continues.
The Environment Agency is working to identify those responsible for the sites. Plans are also being developed with the landowners to arrange the removal and clearance of the waste.
