Woman Dies After Police Pursuit Crash as Watchdog Opens Independent Investigation

A 62-year-old woman has died after being critically injured in a crash involving a car followed by police in Stratford-upon-Avon, with the police watchdog now investigating the deaths of two people.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed that Karen Joseph died after the collision on Warwick Road. Roman Kalas, 19, died at the scene on 24 August.

The collision happened at about 5.40pm after police followed an Audi for around six minutes when it failed to stop. The IOPC is examining the circumstances of the pursuit and has obtained police dashcam footage for review. It is also reviewing CCTV as part of its independent investigation.

The watchdog’s investigation is taking place ahead of inquests into both deaths, which are due to open on 4 September.

The latest update marks a significant new stage in the case, following the death of the second person involved in the crash. The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the police pursuit and the subsequent collision.

The IOPC’s review of dashcam and CCTV footage will form part of its work to establish what happened during the six-minute period before the crash. The inquests are expected to consider the deaths of both Roman Kalas and Karen Joseph.

No conclusion about responsibility has been stated in the information released so far. The watchdog’s investigation and the inquests remain ongoing.
