Seven Arrested in London Raids Over 19 Violent Robberies at Parklife Festival

Seven people have been arrested after police raided 12 addresses across London as part of an investigation into a suspected organised group linked to a series of violent robberies at Parklife Festival in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police launched the investigation after 19 violent robberies were reported during the festival at Heaton Park in July.

Victims reported being approached in crowded areas and asked to hand over valuable possessions including mobile phones and jewellery.

Police say that in several incidents, people who resisted or friends who attempted to intervene were subjected to violence before property was stolen.

Investigators believe those involved would move through festival crowds and allegedly pass stolen items between different people, making the property more difficult to trace.

Extensive CCTV enquiries following the festival resulted in officers identifying a suspect with the assistance of victims.

A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and investigators seized his mobile phone.

Greater Manchester Police says examination of the device uncovered evidence indicating what officers believe may be a wider criminal network.

Following further evidence gathering and intelligence work, Greater Manchester Police officers travelled to London and worked alongside the Metropolitan Police to execute 12 warrants on Wednesday, 26 August.

Seven people were arrested on suspicion of robbery and other related offences.

All seven have subsequently been bailed while the investigation continues. An arrest is not a finding of guilt and no criminal responsibility should be assumed unless established through the courts.

The investigation has now expanded beyond the robberies reported at Parklife.

Commander Claire Smart, the Met’s Gold Commander for Notting Hill Carnival, said the operation was one of a number taking place before the event targeting people suspected of viewing large crowds as an opportunity to commit crime.

Greater Manchester Police says the Parklife investigation has required close cooperation between the two forces as detectives attempted to identify suspects believed to have travelled between different parts of the country.

Detective Inspector Natasha Feerick, from GMP’s City of Manchester Neighbourhood Crime Team, said investigators believe they have uncovered a wider criminal network responsible for causing significant harm to festival-goers.

Police enquiries remain ongoing and the seven people arrested remain under investigation while officers examine the evidence gathered during the raids.

The case also provides a timely warning for people attending large festivals and public events to remain particularly careful with mobile phones, jewellery and other valuables in densely crowded areas.
