World’s Best-Selling Car Turns 60 as Toyota Launches British-Built Anniversary Corolla

Toyota is celebrating 60 years of the Corolla with a new limited-edition model built in Britain, marking six decades of what the manufacturer describes as the world’s best-selling car.

More than 57 million vehicles carrying the Corolla name have been sold worldwide since the original model was launched in 1966.

The new Corolla 60th Anniversary edition for the UK will be produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire alongside existing Corolla models.

UK customers will be able to order the limited-edition hatchback through Toyota centres from October 2026.

Toyota has not yet announced how much the anniversary model will cost, so any suggested UK price should currently be treated as speculation.

The special edition is immediately identifiable by exclusive Boreal Blue metallic paintwork combined with an Eclipse Black roof and pillars.

It also receives distinctive 17-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels, black chrome wheel nuts, matt silver exterior detailing and 60th Anniversary decals on the lower sections of the rear doors.

Inside, Toyota has fitted commemorative door-sill plates and black carpet mats carrying matching anniversary detailing.

The UK anniversary model will use Toyota’s fifth-generation 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain, producing a quoted system output of 138bhp.

Unlike some anniversary editions, the new version is primarily a styling and equipment package rather than a substantially different mechanical model.

The Corolla has now reached 12 generations and is manufactured at 12 locations around the world, with the model sold across approximately 150 countries and regions.

European production began in Turkey in 1994 before expanding to the UK in 1998, making the Corolla a long-established part of Britain’s car-manufacturing industry.

The Burnaston plant currently produces Corolla hatchback models, while Toyota’s Deeside facility in North Wales manufactures hybrid engines.

The Corolla has also remained particularly relevant to high-mileage drivers over the years, with hybrid versions becoming a familiar sight among taxi, private hire and other professional drivers because of their combination of petrol-electric running and established reliability record.

Toyota is also producing anniversary versions for other European markets, including Touring Sports and saloon variants, although the UK announcement specifically confirms the limited-edition hatchback.

After 60 years and more than 57 million sales, the anniversary edition is unlikely to transform the Corolla mechanically, but it does underline the remarkable longevity of one of the most recognisable nameplates in the global car industry.
