Toyota Dominates Carwow’s List of the UK’s Most Economical Cars

Toyota has swept the podium in a new survey of the most economical cars on UK roads, according to feedback from over 100,000 motorists in Carwow’s latest Driver Power survey.

The Toyota Yaris Cross took the top spot, praised by owners for its fuel economy and comfortable driving position, having achieved around 60mpg in Carwow’s own testing. The Aygo X came second, with testers recording an impressive 90mpg, while the standard Yaris rounded out the top three with around 70mpg from its hybrid engine.

Beyond the Toyota trio, the list broadens out across a genuine mix of fuel types. The Vauxhall Frontera and Hyundai Kona took fourth and fifth place respectively, both praised by owners for low running costs, while the Tesla Model Y was the sole fully electric model to make the top ten, landing at sixth. The Kia Niro, Peugeot 2008, Toyota C-HR and Hyundai i10 completed the list.

The full top ten:

  1. Toyota Yaris Cross
  2. Toyota Aygo X
  3. Toyota Yaris
  4. Vauxhall Frontera
  5. Hyundai Kona
  6. Tesla Model Y
  7. Kia Niro
  8. Peugeot 2008
  9. Toyota C-HR
  10. Hyundai i10

For drivers thinking about their next vehicle, the presence of just one EV among nine hybrid and petrol models is a useful reality check. Running costs aren’t only about what’s under the bonnet — a well-sorted small hybrid can still comfortably out-economise plenty of larger alternatives, electric or otherwise, particularly for drivers doing a lot of stop-start city work.
