Gatwick Airport’s long-delayed second runway can now move ahead in full, after the Court of Appeal threw out a legal challenge that had held up the project for years.
The ruling clears the way for the airport’s existing standby northern runway to come into full, regular use from 2030, alongside the main runway. Once operational, it’s expected to enable up to 100,000 additional flights a year — a significant jump in capacity for what is currently the busiest single-runway airport in the world.
The £2.2 billion expansion was originally approved by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in September 2025, but campaign group Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) and campaigner Peter Barclay challenged the decision, arguing the government hadn’t properly assessed the project’s climate impact. That challenge has now been comprehensively rejected, bringing what Gatwick’s chief executive Pierre-Hugues Schmit called an eight-year planning and legal process to a close.
The project involves physically shifting the existing emergency runway 12 metres north, allowing it to be used for scheduled departures by narrow-bodied aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Alongside the extra flights, the government says the expansion will create 14,000 new jobs and deliver around £1 billion a year in economic benefit to the South East.
For drivers working the Gatwick run, this is one to watch over the next few years rather than something that changes anything overnight — construction and the full ramp-up to 100,000 extra flights a year won’t happen until 2030. But a busier Gatwick from the end of the decade means more passengers, more destinations, and likely more demand for airport transfers in the years ahead.
