A private hire vehicle operating in Liverpool has been suspended after enforcement officers found it was missing almost every piece of required identification, in the latest of a string of compliance crackdowns across the city.
Liverpool City Council Licensing Enforcement Officers carried out a weekend inspection in the city centre and found the vehicle had no front plate, no rear plate, no no-smoking sign, and no door signs, all of which are legally required by the licensing authority. The stop took place in the early hours of 12 July.
In a statement, the council said simply that compliance checks continue to keep passengers safe, underlining the message that these inspections aren’t a one-off, but part of an ongoing effort to keep unlicensed or non-compliant vehicles off Liverpool’s streets.
Registration plates are a legal requirement under road traffic law, while door signage and no-smoking notices allow both passengers and enforcement officers to quickly confirm a vehicle is properly and legally licensed. Their absence isn’t just a paperwork issue, it makes it far harder for passengers to know they’re getting into a genuine, licensed vehicle.
It’s a timely reminder for every PHV driver in the city to double-check their vehicle before every shift. A missing sign or a plate that’s come loose might seem minor, but as this latest suspension shows, it’s more than enough to see a vehicle taken off the road.
