A van driver is being hailed a hero after rescuing a taxi driver and two passengers who had no idea their vehicle was on fire as they travelled along the M60.
The drama unfolded near Simister Island in Greater Manchester on Thursday. The van driver was making his way along the motorway when he spotted flames coming from a nearby taxi. Realising the people inside were completely unaware of the danger, he pulled up alongside to warn them.
“I drove near him and told him he needed to pull over — he was not aware of the fire,” the van driver recalled. Once the taxi stopped, he didn’t hesitate to get stuck in. Noticing that one of the two passengers was disabled, he helped everyone safely out of the burning vehicle and dialled 999.

Determined to keep them out of harm’s way, he then loaded all three into his own van and drove them to a safe spot away from the blaze to wait for the emergency services. He later said he was amazed at how quickly firefighters arrived on the scene.
It’s a story that could so easily have ended very differently — and a powerful example of how quick thinking and a bit of courage from a passing stranger can make all the difference. For the taxi driver and passengers involved, it was a lucky escape they won’t forget in a hurry.
