A disturbing video has emerged showing a 61-year-old Uber driver being violently assaulted by a passenger during a live ride in Broward County, Florida.
According to reporting by 7News WSVN, the incident took place on Friday 2 January 2026, when driver Nelson Carinao picked up 19-year-old Isaiah Norton for a trip heading south on Interstate 95 towards Miami. During the journey, Norton suddenly launched a sustained attack on the driver while the vehicle was still moving.
Dashcam footage from inside the vehicle shows Norton repeatedly punching the driver, laughing at times as the assault continues. At one point, the passenger briefly exits the car before returning and dragging the driver back inside, preventing him from escaping. The attack only ended when Carinao managed to break free and get away from the vehicle.

Carinao suffered cuts and bruises as a result of the assault. Norton fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterwards by police and charged with battery and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $1,000, and he remains in custody.
In a statement issued after the incident, Uber confirmed the rider’s access to the app had been removed and said it was cooperating with authorities while reiterating its stance on driver safety. The driver’s family later shared the footage publicly, calling for stronger protections for ride-hail drivers.
DM News Commentary
This is an extremely troubling case and one that will sadly resonate with many drivers across the taxi, private hire and ride-hail industries worldwide.
Drivers often work alone, confined in a vehicle, and reliant on strangers behaving responsibly. When that trust is broken, the consequences can be terrifying, as seen here. While platforms promote in-app safety tools and emergency features, this incident highlights how quickly situations can escalate before help can realistically intervene.

Cases like this strengthen the argument for:
- Tougher criminal consequences for assaults on professional drivers
- Faster real-time intervention options
- Greater public awareness that drivers are workers, not targets
No one should expect to be assaulted simply for doing their job. Incidents like this underline why driver safety remains a critical issue that platforms, lawmakers and law enforcement cannot ignore.
