Uber Cash Scam Drivers and Passengers Need to Be Aware Of

A worrying issue involving Uber Cash trips has been brought to light after a passenger contacted Driver Matty via social media, asking for advice after being left out of pocket.

The passenger explained that he booked an Uber Cash trip costing £21. He paid the driver the full £21 in cash at the end of the journey and thought nothing more of it.

However, when booking another Uber Cash trip later, the second driver demanded not only the new fare, but an additional £21 from the previous journey. Confused, the passenger later discovered what had happened.

How the Uber Cash System Works

On Uber Cash trips, it is the driver’s responsibility to input how much cash they received from the passenger in the app at the end of the journey.

If the fare is £21, the driver can enter:

  • £21 (full amount received)
  • £10 (partial payment)
  • £0 (no payment received)

If anything less than the full fare is entered, Uber will automatically attempt to collect the remaining balance from the passenger later.

What Went Wrong in This Case

In this situation:

  • The passenger paid the first driver £21 in full
  • The driver allegedly entered £0 received
  • Uber then treated the journey as unpaid
  • The system attempted to recover the £21 on the passenger’s next cash booking

The end result?
The passenger took two Uber trips but effectively paid for three, while the first driver may have pocketed the cash and still been reimbursed by Uber.

DM Commentary

This is a serious flaw in the Uber Cash system that puts passengers at risk and also damages trust in honest drivers.

While most drivers do the right thing, the system currently allows:

  • Cash to be accepted
  • Incorrect amounts to be entered
  • Uber to recover money from passengers without proof

Passengers using Uber Cash should always double-check that the driver has entered the correct amount before leaving the vehicle, and drivers should remember that misusing the cash system is effectively fraud and could lead to deactivation if proven.

Uber really needs to tighten controls around cash trips — whether that’s passenger confirmation, mandatory amount verification, or clearer receipts — because stories like this hurt everyone involved.
