Uber Driver Shot Dead by 15-Year-Old in New Year’s Day Carjacking

A 15-year-old boy from Georgia has been charged with murder as an adult following the fatal shooting of an Uber driver in the early hours of New Year’s Day, according to reporting by the New York Post.

The victim, Cesar Tejada, was a 58-year-old Uber driver who was working during the night when the incident occurred. Police say the teenager, identified as Christian Simmons, requested a ride through Uber at around 4:13am on 1 January in Lawrenceville.
According to the report, after the journey ended, the teenager allegedly shot the driver, removed him from the vehicle, and drove off in his SUV, leaving him in the road. The driver later died from his injuries, as reported by the New York Post.

Investigators were able to track the stolen vehicle using automatic number-plate recognition technology, alongside information provided by Uber. The suspect was later arrested close to his home and has since been charged with murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the article states.

Uber confirmed that the rider account involved has been permanently banned and expressed condolences to the driver’s family, according to the same report.

This is a devastating reminder of the real dangers faced by private hire and rideshare drivers, particularly during late-night and early-morning shifts. Many drivers work unsociable hours simply to make ends meet, trusting that the systems in place will keep them safe.

While this incident took place in the United States, it will resonate deeply with UK taxi and private hire drivers. Driver safety must always be prioritised, and platforms cannot rely solely on reactive measures after tragedies occur. Robust passenger verification, better real-time risk alerts, and stronger safeguards for vulnerable drivers are essential.

No fare, surge, or incentive is worth a life — and cases like this underline why safety discussions across the industry are more important than ever.
