Taxi Driver Hospitalised After Knife Attack During Early-Morning Job

A veteran minibus driver with 22 years’ service working for Mi Taxis was stabbed during an armed robbery in the early hours of this morning while on duty in Nuneaton.

According to details on PHTM Newspaper on Facebook, the incident happened at approximately 3:24am when the driver attended a pickup from a known address in Nuneaton.

The male passenger entered the front seat of the partitioned minibus and asked to be taken to a 24-hour garage. The driver agreed to the request but asked the passenger to move to the rear of the vehicle. At that point, the passenger produced a knife and demanded money.

As the driver instinctively raised his hands to protect his face, he was stabbed in the hand. The attacker then fled the scene on foot.

The injured driver was taken to hospital, where he received 11 stitches to his hand. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police were called immediately and have been provided with the suspect’s phone number, along with details of previous pickup addresses linked to the passenger, as reported by PHTM Newspaper. Officers are hopeful this information will lead to an arrest.

As part of the investigation, the minibus has been seized for forensic examination, meaning both the driver and the vehicle will be off the road over the Christmas period.

DM News Commentary

This is a stark and sobering reminder for taxi and private hire drivers, particularly at Christmas time, when desperation and financial pressure can increase the risk of crime.

Drivers who carry a cash float may be seen as easy targets, especially during late-night and early-morning shifts. Where possible, drivers should remain vigilant, trust their instincts, use in-vehicle safety features, and avoid situations that feel unsafe.

Everyone at DM News wishes the driver a full and speedy recovery and hopes those responsible are caught quickly. Please stay alert, look out for one another, and have a busy but safe Christmas on the roads.
