As Britain prepares to fall silent on Remembrance Sunday, London’s black cab drivers are once again stepping up to honour the nation’s war heroes — by offering more than 1,000 free taxi journeys for veterans travelling to and from the Cenotaph.
According to an The Daily Express, the event will see hundreds of volunteer drivers — known collectively as Poppy Cabs — giving up their Sunday earnings to transport servicemen and women to the national memorial in Westminster.
The initiative, which began shortly after the 2005 London bombings, has grown into one of the most heart-warming traditions of Remembrance weekend. Each participating cabbie donates their time, fuel and vehicle to ensure veterans can travel safely and comfortably to the service, completely free of charge.
Pick-up points will operate at key London transport hubs, including King’s Cross, Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo. Following the ceremony, return taxis will line up along Westminster Bridge to take veterans home. Every black cab involved is wheelchair-accessible, meaning even those with limited mobility can attend the parade.
Many of the drivers taking part have personal or family links to the armed forces. They view the event not just as a gesture of goodwill but as a duty to those who once served. One veteran quoted by the Express described the volunteer cabbies as “unsung heroes” who make the day possible for many ex-servicemen and women who might otherwise be unable to attend.

DM News commentary
This annual show of solidarity highlights the community values that remain strong within London’s taxi trade. For many cabbies, the Poppy Cabs convoy is more than a tradition — it’s a tribute from one service to another.
At a time when the taxi industry faces increasing financial pressure, it’s inspiring to see drivers still giving back to society in such a selfless way. The initiative not only supports veterans but also reinforces the black cab trade’s proud reputation for service, reliability and compassion.
