A 62-year-old Belfast taxi driver, Patrick Griffin, has been banned from driving for 12 months and fined £250 after admitting to driving with excess alcohol.
According to a report by The Impartial Reporter, the offence took place on 10 August 2025, when police stopped Griffin’s grey Škoda taxi on Boa Island Road, Belleek after noticing it being driven erratically. Officers observed that Griffin’s speech was slurred, and a breath test later showed a reading of 62 mg of alcohol, almost twice the legal limit.
At Enniskillen Magistrates’ Court, Griffin’s defence barrister, Ciarán Roddy, told the court his client “fully accepts that he will be out of work” due to the ban and that he also cares for his wife, making the disqualification particularly challenging. District Judge Alana McSorley imposed the 12-month driving ban and a £250 fine.
The case was also covered by PHTM News, which reported that Griffin’s taxi was stopped after officers saw it weaving on the road.
Implications for the taxi and private hire trade
- As a licensed taxi driver, Griffin’s disqualification effectively removes his ability to work for at least a year, potentially affecting his future licence status.
- The case underscores the zero-tolerance approach authorities take towards drink-driving, particularly for professional drivers entrusted with public safety.
- It also serves as a reminder for all taxi and private hire drivers that alcohol-related convictions can have career-ending consequences — from loss of income and insurance coverage to reputational damage and council licence reviews.

DM News Commentary
For those in the taxi and private hire industry, this case highlights how even a single lapse in judgement can have devastating effects on both personal and professional life. With many drivers relying solely on their vehicle for income, maintaining full compliance with drink-drive laws is essential not only for safety but also for livelihood. Public confidence in licensed drivers depends on strict adherence to professional standards.
