A private hire driver has been reported by West Midlands Police after being spotted using a handheld mobile phone while driving on the M6.
Officers taking part in Operation Tramline observed the driver operating the vehicle “in an unprofessional manner” before a closer inspection revealed the phone offence. According to the force, checks later confirmed that the motorist already had seven points on their driving licence.
The driver was subsequently reported for the offence, which could see further penalty points and a fine issued.
Operation Tramline is a joint initiative between National Highways and police forces across the UK, using unmarked HGVs to identify dangerous or illegal driving behaviour from an elevated vantage point. The operation has caught thousands of motorists for offences such as mobile phone use, seatbelt violations, and careless driving.

DM News Commentary
Professionalism behind the wheel is a key expectation for all licensed taxi and private hire drivers. Incidents like this not only risk penalty points and fines but can also lead to suspension or revocation of a private hire licence by the local authority.
For drivers working long hours on motorways, this case is another reminder of the serious consequences of distracted driving.
