Uber introduces automatic assistance dog notification for drivers

Uber has rolled out a new in-app feature allowing riders to automatically notify drivers when they are travelling with an assistance dog.

According to the update sent to drivers via the Uber Driver app, riders can now choose to disclose if they’re accompanied by an assistance dog. When this option is selected, the driver will be informed at the pick-up stage.

The update also reiterates Uber’s zero-tolerance policy on denying service to passengers with assistance dogs. The company reminded drivers that refusing such riders is both a criminal offence and a breach of Uber policy, unless the driver holds a valid medical exemption issued by their local licensing authority.

Uber warned that any breach could result in criminal prosecution and permanent deactivation from the platform.

This update further reinforces Uber’s compliance with UK equality and accessibility laws, ensuring that passengers with disabilities have equal access to transport services. The automatic notification system is expected to reduce misunderstandings between drivers and riders while providing clarity at the time of booking.
