A taxi driver from Newport has been ordered to hand over more than £128,000 after being caught transporting high-purity cocaine in his cab.
55-year-old Mohammed Yamin was stopped by Gwent Police near Pontllanfraith on 22 May 2023, where officers discovered 2kg of high-purity cocaine hidden inside his vehicle. A subsequent search led to the recovery of £17,000 in cash.
Detective Constable Hackney from Gwent Police said Yamin “played a significant role in the distribution of wholesale amounts of cocaine,” adding that the drugs were “being taken to the Blackwood area” at the time of his arrest.
Yamin was later found guilty of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and sentenced to six years and six months in prison.
At a Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, 9 October 2025, it was revealed that Yamin had benefited from his criminal activity by £128,409. Judge Daniel Williams ordered him to repay the full amount within three months, or face an additional 15 months in prison if he fails to do so.
DC Hackney said he hoped the case would serve as a deterrent to others:
“This sentence acts not only as a warning against others who are tempted to engage in such criminality but reassures the community that we are committed to targeting those involved in drug supply.”
