Sleaford council investigates reports of unlicensed taxi operating illegally

Concerns have been raised in Sleaford after reports emerged of an allegedly unlicensed taxi driver continuing to operate illegally in the area.

The driver, reportedly using a silver Skoda Kodiaq with registration EU22 AYM, had previously surrendered his hire driver licence to North Kesteven District Council’s Licensing Team following an earlier investigation.

Officers had previously stopped the man and discovered he was using the vehicle as a taxi without it being licensed, despite holding a valid hire driver badge at the time. During that stop, he was found carrying two passengers and later admitted in interview that he had been “working using an unlicensed vehicle due to his licensed taxi being off the road.”

Local taxi drivers have since reported seeing the same vehicle again, which is believed to have a hackney carriage meter fitted but no visible licence plates or identifying signage.

The council confirmed that both the driver’s licence and the vehicle’s taxi licence remain surrendered and suspended, citing previous safety concerns. However, officials say they are still receiving new reports suggesting the driver continues to work illegally.

A spokesperson for North Kesteven District Council said:

“We are aware of ongoing concerns and are working closely with Lincolnshire Police to address the situation. We urge the public to remain vigilant and only travel in vehicles and with drivers displaying valid council-issued plates and badges.”

Passengers can verify licensed taxis and private hire vehicles through the council’s website or by checking for visible licence plates and photo ID badges before travelling.
