Wolverhampton Officers Find Private Hire Vehicles in Hull Mostly Compliant

Compliance checks highlight cross-border taxi licensing issues

Wolverhampton City Council’s compliance officers were out in Hull city centre last night carrying out spot checks on private hire vehicles and drivers licensed by the authority.

A total of 10 vehicles were inspected, with all found to be fully compliant with licensing regulations. Only one driver was given advice about the importance of wearing their taxi badge while working, but no enforcement action was taken.

The checks were carried out in partnership with local Hull officers as part of ongoing joint operations to ensure passenger safety and uphold licensing standards.

Cross-border licensing under scrutiny

The operation comes at a time when cross-border licensing is a hot topic in the taxi and private hire industry. Wolverhampton has issued tens of thousands of licences to drivers and operators across the country, due to its fast, digital system and daily DBS checks.

While this streamlined process has been praised for efficiency, it has also sparked concerns from other councils who argue that it undermines local enforcement. Hull is among many cities where Wolverhampton-badged vehicles regularly operate, meaning local authorities have limited control over standards.

Joint compliance checks like this are intended to close that gap, ensuring vehicles licensed elsewhere still meet safety and regulatory requirements when working in different areas.

Passenger safety remains priority

A spokesperson for Wolverhampton Council has previously emphasised that the city’s licensing system is “robust, transparent, and designed to keep passengers safe.”

Meanwhile, Hull City Council has welcomed collaborative inspections as a way to improve visibility and accountability for both drivers and passengers.
