Driver Reported After Ignoring ‘Keep Left’ Motorway Warning

A Sefton-licensed private hire vehicle driver has been reported by police after blatantly ignoring motorway lane discipline warnings and continuing to “hog” the middle lane of the M60 for miles — despite clear signage and an empty left-hand lane.

Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Policing Unit had deployed matrix boards displaying messages such as “STOP LANE HOGGING” and “USE LEFT LANE” in an effort to educate and alert drivers. However, this particular driver remained in lane 2 for more than two junctions while lane 1 remained entirely clear.

When stopped, the driver reportedly told officers:

“I always drive in the middle lane and fast lane, what’s the problem?”

The motorist was swiftly reported for careless driving under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Police reminded drivers that improper lane use can lead to congestion, increase the risk of accidents, and is a punishable offence. Middle-lane hogging has been enforceable under careless driving laws since 2013, with penalties ranging from points on the licence to fixed fines.

Lane discipline is particularly important on motorways like the M60, where heavy traffic and lane weaving can create serious safety hazards.

The Roads Policing Unit reiterated:

“If lane 1 is clear, you must use it. The middle and outer lanes are only for overtaking. Failure to do so is not only bad driving — it’s illegal.”
