Uber has launched a new initiative aimed at making its app and services more accessible for older passengers. The new Senior Accounts feature — now being rolled out in the UK — offers a simpler, streamlined version of the Uber experience specifically tailored for those who may find technology or ride-hailing apps difficult to navigate.
The move comes as part of Uber’s broader effort to support the growing number of older people who rely on transport to maintain independence, attend medical appointments, and stay connected with family and friends.
A Simpler Experience
At the heart of the initiative is Simple Mode — a decluttered version of the Uber app interface designed with older users in mind. It features:
- Larger text and buttons
- Fewer, clearer options
- Saved places like home, GP, or favourite shops
- Step-by-step guidance for booking a trip
This simpler layout removes the stress and confusion often associated with app-based booking, while still allowing seniors to travel independently.
Family Profile Integration
Uber is also encouraging family members or carers to use the Family Profile feature to support their loved ones. Through this, they can:
- Request and manage rides on behalf of a senior
- Pay for the trip using their own payment method
- Track rides live and receive updates throughout the journey
- Communicate with the driver, if needed
This system ensures peace of mind for both riders and their families, particularly useful for elderly passengers who may feel vulnerable travelling alone.
Healthcare and Accessibility Benefits
Another key aspect of the Senior Account experience is its compatibility with healthcare benefit cards, where supported. This could help cover the cost of eligible medical journeys — such as hospital visits or GP appointments — offering even more convenience for users.
Uber says this is part of a global push to make transportation more inclusive, with the Senior Accounts programme already being piloted in countries like the US, France, and Taiwan.
The rollout complements other accessible services such as Uber Assist, where drivers are trained to help riders who need extra support, including those with mobility issues or visual impairments.
A Step Toward Age-Friendly Travel
The UK has an ageing population, with millions of people aged 65 and over who may no longer drive or find public transport challenging. Uber’s move reflects a growing awareness in the transport sector of the need for age-friendly travel options.
For many older passengers, retaining the ability to travel safely and independently is a major factor in maintaining a high quality of life. By tailoring the ride-hailing experience for this demographic, Uber is taking a significant step toward inclusive mobility.
