Private Hire Taxi Driver Robbed in Broad Daylight in St Helens

A private hire taxi driver was left injured and shaken after being robbed in a brazen daylight attack in St Helens.

Merseyside Police were called to Stainton Close at around 5.10pm on Sunday, 29 June, following reports of a robbery involving a private hire driver in his 40s. The victim had been waiting in his black Citroën Dispatch for a fare when he was approached by a young white male on a black and grey electric bike.

The suspect, who was wearing a grey tracksuit and a black cap, rode directly in front of the cab and began interfering with one of the vehicle’s tyres.

Moments later, three more men—also described as white—emerged from a nearby block of flats. One of the suspects was over 6ft tall, in his 30s, of large build with long brown hair, and wearing grey shorts and an olive-coloured T-shirt. Another was said to be in his mid-30s to 40s with grey hair.

The group began shouting aggressively at the driver before attempting to snatch his car keys. During the confrontation, the suspects assaulted the driver and stole cash and the keys to his vehicle, leaving the car undrivable. The victim suffered facial injuries in the attack and is said to be deeply shaken.

Detective Inspector Jimmy Rotherham, leading the investigation, said:

“This incident left the victim in shock with facial injuries and with considerable expense as the suspects stole cash and keys, leaving the car undrivable. People working in our communities providing vital services should be able to work without fear of being subjected to an ordeal like this.

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible for this robbery. This includes examination of CCTV footage and forensic enquiries, and we would be keen to hear from anyone who might have dashcam footage or CCTV in that area. We also appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident itself or who saw the offenders acting suspiciously to get in touch.”
