French Air Traffic Control Strikes Set to Disrupt UK and European Flights on July 3–4

Travellers across the UK and Europe are being warned of major disruption this week as French air traffic controllers prepare to stage strikes on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 July. The industrial action is expected to cause widespread delays and cancellations, with flight capacity reductions of up to 50% at some French airports.

The strikes, which are part of an ongoing dispute over working conditions and pay, are not limited to flights in and out of France. Due to shared European airspace and interconnected flight routes, the knock-on effect is expected to impact thousands of journeys across neighbouring countries — including the UK.

The UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has already issued warnings that flights routed through French airspace may experience delays or re-routing, even if their origin or destination is not in France. Airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh could all see schedule disruptions.

Airlines are being forced to revise their timetables in response. Some may cancel flights in advance, while others will attempt to reschedule or reroute around French-controlled zones. Ryanair, easyJet, and British Airways are among those expected to be hardest hit.

Aviation experts have criticised the impact of repeated French ATC strikes on the wider European air travel network. With much of UK-to-Spain or Italy traffic passing through French skies, the geographical choke point often leads to a disproportionate effect on UK travellers.

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport, and to prepare for potential delays or last-minute changes. Airlines have pledged to notify customers directly if their journey is affected.

The latest strike follows a series of similar walkouts by French controllers in recent years. Talks between unions and the French government are reportedly ongoing, but no resolution has been reached so far.
