A man who masqueraded as an “unofficial Uber” driver has been found guilty once again of sexually assaulting vulnerable women in Brighton.
Graham Head, 68, from Pevensey in East Sussex, was convicted on Thursday 19 June at Lewes Crown Court following an eight-hour jury deliberation. This marks his second conviction after his previous guilty verdict was overturned on appeal.
In July 2023, Head had originally been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the kidnap and attempted rape of a 25-year-old woman, as well as the assault by penetration of a 19-year-old woman. However, his conviction was quashed in November 2024 due to concerns raised about the conduct of the trial judge.
During the retrial, the jury heard chilling details of how Head operated. Prosecutor Paul Jarvis KC described him as a “sexual predator” who targeted “vulnerable and intoxicated” young women while posing as an unlicensed Uber-style driver. Head drove a silver Mercedes estate, which police later found contained latex gloves, condoms, Viagra tablets, and a balaclava at the time of his arrest in November 2022.
Business cards advertising him as an “N-Uber driver” with the slogan “Safe and Reliable – For All Occasions” were also discovered at his home.
Jarvis explained to the court: “He based himself in Pevensey, ostensibly working as an unofficial Uber driver. He was actively searching for young women whom he could sexually abuse. He carried Viagra and condoms either on his person or in his car, and used latex gloves to reduce the chances of leaving any DNA evidence behind.”
The court also heard that Head deliberately switched his two mobile phones into flight mode during his predatory searches to avoid creating any network records that could track his movements.
The two assaults took place in the early hours of August 19, 2022, at Hove Park, and on November 18, 2022, outside one of the victim’s homes. One of the women, aged 25, sadly passed away before the retrial and did not give evidence. However, she had managed to memorise part of Head’s vehicle registration — “L21” — which proved crucial in leading police to his arrest.
As Jarvis put it: “He slipped up on November 19 2022 because his victim was alert enough to memorise part of the licence plate, enabling police to identify his car.”
Throughout the trial, Head maintained his innocence, claiming he had offered the 25-year-old a lift home but never assaulted her, and denied ever meeting the second victim.
Graham Head is due to be sentenced on 22 August 2025.
