Uber Driver Accused of Punching Two Female Passengers in Nottingham — Family ‘Flabbergasted’ as Police Drop Case

A Nottingham family has expressed outrage after police chose not to pursue action against an Uber driver accused of assaulting two sisters during a late-night ride in the city centre.

The alleged incident occurred on 23 March after the sisters, aged 20 and 28, ordered an Uber on Angel Row following a night out. According to the family, the journey took a distressing turn when the older sister began feeling unwell. Her younger sibling asked to open a window, prompting the driver to allegedly snap: “If you’re going to get sick, get out of my car,” before launching into verbal abuse.

As tensions escalated, the women decided to leave the vehicle. One began filming the exchange, reportedly shutting the door “harshly” behind her. It is then claimed that the driver exited the vehicle and punched the sister who was recording. A male bystander who stepped in to intervene was also allegedly assaulted, and both sisters say they were punched by the driver.

Footage of the incident has since circulated online. However, Nottinghamshire Police opted not to dispatch officers at the time due to high demand and the driver having already left the scene. Two months later, the family was informed the case had been closed.

In an email sent to the family, Nottinghamshire Police said: “Having interviewed the taxi driver, it has been decided there is not enough reliable evidence to progress this job. Both the provided statements undermine each other as to the events that happened and the initial call from yourself differs to your statement.”

The response has left the family reeling. Cllr Sarita-Marie Rehman-Wall, the sisters’ mother and a Labour councillor for Bulwell Forest, said: “We are absolutely flabbergasted. You can’t look at that video and not be absolutely astounded.

“They didn’t take into consideration how traumatised they were and how that could affect their statements. My daughter said she’s lost faith in humanity and can’t trust men. It’s disgraceful — shame on Nottinghamshire Police. We will keep pushing for a complaint.”

While the police investigation has now concluded, the City of Wolverhampton Council — which licensed the Uber driver — confirmed that his licence has been revoked with immediate effect.

Uber has not publicly commented on the case at the time of writing.
