York and Bristol authorities have taken decisive action to ensure passenger safety, with targeted inspections leading to multiple suspensions and enforcement measures against unsafe taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs).
York: Seven Out-of-Town PHVs Suspended
North Yorkshire Police joined forces with City of York Council licensing officers in an operation focusing on vehicles working in the city but licensed elsewhere. The spot checks took place at key locations across York, targeting private hire vehicles operating during the busy summer period.
Out of the vehicles inspected, seven out-of-town PHVs were immediately suspended due to a range of safety issues. Defects included worn tyres, faulty lights, and issues with insurance or licensing documentation. Officers stressed that such faults put both passengers and drivers at risk.
A spokesperson for City of York Council said:
“We welcome visitors and vehicles from other areas, but every driver must meet the same high safety standards. Passenger safety will always be our priority.”
Bristol Airport: 177 Vehicles Checked from 25 Licensing Authorities
In a separate operation at Bristol Airport, Avon and Somerset Police teamed up with airport staff and licensing officers from across the region to inspect taxis and PHVs arriving at the terminal.
- 177 vehicles were checked.
- 75% passed with no issues.
- Several vehicles were taken off the road for serious defects, such as bald tyres and broken lights.
- Officers also identified cases where plates were not displayed correctly, in breach of licensing regulations.
Police officers said the joint initiative was designed to keep the travelling public safe, particularly during peak summer travel when taxi and PHV demand is high.
Industry Reaction
Driver groups have largely welcomed the checks, saying that safety operations help maintain the reputation of professional taxi and PHV drivers.
However, some drivers expressed concerns over “out-of-town” vehicles operating in areas where they are unfamiliar with local rules, calling for stronger national licensing standards to reduce cross-border issues.
