A coordinated taxi and private hire licensing operation was carried out yesterday across three major regional airports, despite torrential weather conditions.
The operation was confirmed in a post shared by the Wolverhampton Council Public Protection team on X (formerly Twitter), where officers highlighted that they were out in “wet, wet, wet” conditions at Birmingham Airport, Manchester Airport, and East Midlands Airport.

According to the post, the activity formed part of cross-border compliance and partnership working, with the aim of ensuring passengers were getting home or away safely using correctly licensed vehicles and drivers.
Even with heavy rain throughout the operation, Wolverhampton’s taxi licensing compliance team confirmed they were out in force at multiple airports simultaneously, working alongside partner authorities as part of wider enforcement checks.
DM News Commentary
Credit where it’s due — this is enforcement being done properly. Airports are one of the busiest pressure points for cross-border hiring, particularly late at night and during poor weather when illegal or non-compliant activity is more likely to slip through unnoticed.
The fact that compliance officers were present across three airports at the same time, and in torrential rain, sends a clear message to drivers and operators alike: airport work is being closely monitored. Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles operating nationally continue to face intense scrutiny, especially in hotspot locations like Manchester, Birmingham and East Midlands.
For passengers, visible enforcement helps build confidence that the vehicle they’re getting into is safe and legally licensed. For drivers and operators who follow the rules, operations like this help level the playing field by targeting those cutting corners.
