West Lothian Taxi Fares Set for 9.5% Rise Ahead of Christmas

West Lothian Taxi Fares Set for 9.5% Rise Ahead of Christmas

Taxi passengers in West Lothian could soon face higher fares, with the council backing a proposed rise of up to 9.5% — the largest increase in years.

If approved, the changes will see festive journeys cost significantly more, with a 10-mile trip set to increase by over £4 during the Christmas season.

Council Approves Proposal

West Lothian Council, which is legally required to review taxi fares every 18 months, considered two proposals at a recent Executive meeting. The plan put forward by the West Lothian Taxi Owners Association (TOA) won with 12 votes in favour, while a rival proposal from the West Lothian Association of Taxi Owners (WLAOTO) Fellowship received none.

The approved TOA proposal introduces increases across all tariffs. Under the new structure:

  • A one-mile Tariff 1 journey will rise from £4.80 to £5.20 — an 8.3% increase.
  • A five-mile Tariff 1 journey will increase from £12.80 to £14.
  • A 10-mile Tariff 1 journey will jump from £22.80 to £25.

While fares are going up, the controversial £40 clean-up charge for soiled vehicles is set to remain unchanged, despite some calls from drivers for an increase to £60.

What Happens Next

The proposed fare table will now be advertised for public consultation. If no objections are received, the changes will come into force by the end of November — just in time for the busy festive period.

The rise comes as drivers across Scotland highlight the growing cost of fuel, maintenance, and insurance, which they argue makes fare adjustments essential to keep the trade sustainable.
