West Dunbartonshire Taxi Driver Loses Licence After Drugs Found in Vehicle

A taxi driver licensed by West Dunbartonshire Council has been stripped of his licence after police discovered a large quantity of drugs in his vehicle, according to a report by the Dumbarton Reporter.

The article states that the driver was stopped by police outside the local authority area, where officers found around 4kg of cannabis hidden in the boot of the taxi. The drugs were reportedly concealed inside a boxed household item. The discovery led to the driver being arrested at the roadside and later appearing in court.

Following notification from the police, West Dunbartonshire Council reviewed the matter at a licensing hearing. Councillors concluded that the driver no longer met the required “fit and proper person” standard expected of taxi licence holders. As a result, both the taxi driver licence and the vehicle licence were revoked, effectively preventing the individual from continuing to work in the trade.

Cases like this highlight just how quickly a taxi career can come to an end when serious criminal matters are involved. Licensing authorities across the UK place huge weight on trust, passenger safety, and public confidence — and drug-related offences sit at the very top of concerns.

For drivers, this serves as another reminder that your vehicle is not just personal transport — it’s a licensed public-facing workplace. Any activity that risks public safety or undermines confidence in the trade is almost guaranteed to result in licence loss, often long before a criminal case is fully concluded.

Licensing committees don’t wait for sympathy or mitigation in situations like this — once the “fit and proper” test fails, the outcome is usually unavoidable.
