Waymo Targets London Robotaxi Launch as Early as September

US autonomous vehicle company Waymo has confirmed plans to bring its driverless taxi technology to London, with hopes of launching a robotaxi service as early as September.

According to reporting by the BBC, Waymo intends to begin a pilot phase in April, using vehicles already mapping London streets. At present, these cars still have a safety driver onboard, but the long-term aim is to operate without a human behind the wheel once regulations allow.

The UK government has said it plans to update rules to permit driverless taxis in the second half of 2026, although no firm start date has been set. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood has publicly backed autonomous vehicle trials, stating that the government is supporting innovation while insisting strict safety and cybersecurity standards must be met before full deployment.

When the service is approved for paying passengers, users will be able to book rides via an app. Airport trips will not be included at launch. Waymo has indicated fares will be competitively priced but positioned at the premium end, with surge-style pricing during busy periods.

Rival firms, including Uber and Lyft, have also signalled they are preparing for the UK robotaxi market once legislation permits.

DM News Commentary

While this is a major step forward for driverless technology in the UK, it’s worth keeping expectations realistic. A London pilot does not mean mass rollout, and with regulations still some way off, widespread driverless taxis are unlikely to appear overnight.

Limits such as no airport work, premium pricing, and tightly controlled operating areas mean traditional taxis and private hire vehicles won’t suddenly disappear. For now, this feels more like a long-term warning shot than an immediate threat.

That said, once London opens the door, other UK cities could follow — and the taxi and private hire industry will need to keep a close eye on how quickly this technology scales.
