A viral video circulating on TikTok shows a Waymo self-driving taxi in the United States coming to a stop on active tram tracks, forcing a passenger to jump out of the vehicle as a tram approaches from behind.
The footage, shared on TikTok by user luisito6987, captures the autonomous vehicle stationary on the rails while warning bells can be heard in the background. As the tram gets closer, the passenger exits the Waymo robotaxi quickly and moves away from the tracks, leaving the vehicle blocking the line.
The incident appears to have taken place on a light-rail system in the US, where Waymo operates fully driverless ride-hailing services in selected cities. In the clip, the vehicle can be seen with its hazard lights on, but there is no human driver inside to manually move the car off the tracks.
While no injuries were reported, the video has sparked widespread discussion online about how autonomous vehicles handle complex road layouts, especially where trams, light rail, and mixed traffic systems are involved.

DM News Commentary
Incidents like this highlight one of the biggest challenges facing autonomous vehicles: unpredictable real-world infrastructure.
Tram tracks, shared road spaces, temporary layouts, and unusual junctions can easily confuse even advanced self-driving systems. For taxi and private hire drivers watching this unfold, it’s another reminder that while automation is improving fast, it still struggles in environments that human drivers instinctively understand.
From a UK perspective, this kind of situation would raise serious safety questions if replicated in cities with heavy tram usage like Manchester, Nottingham, or Sheffield. A stranded vehicle on tram lines isn’t just an inconvenience — it can quickly become a major safety risk.
For now, human drivers still have one huge advantage: judgement under pressure.
