A viral TikTok video shared by TikTok user @bottomculture shows passengers filming themselves inside a Waymo self-driving taxi in the United States. In the clip, five people can be seen riding in the vehicle, despite Waymo’s clear rule that its robotaxis are limited to a maximum of four passengers.
During the journey, Waymo support staff can be heard speaking to the group through the vehicle’s system. The operator explains that the car has detected five occupants and states that Waymo can see this using the vehicle’s 29 onboard cameras. The passengers are then told the vehicle will pull over so that one person can exit, bringing the ride back into compliance with Waymo’s passenger limit.
The vehicle subsequently slows and pulls over, reinforcing that the rule is actively monitored and enforced in real time. The interaction highlights how closely Waymo supervises trips remotely, even though the cars operate without a human driver onboard.

DM News Commentary
This clip is a real eye-opener for anyone curious about how “driverless” taxis are actually managed. While there’s no driver in the seat, Waymo vehicles are clearly not operating unchecked. Passenger numbers, behaviour, and compliance are being monitored constantly, and intervention happens immediately when rules are broken.
From a taxi and private hire perspective, this raises interesting questions. Traditional drivers are held to strict licensing and safety standards, but here we’re seeing autonomous vehicles enforcing their own rules automatically, without debate. Five people squeezing into a car might seem minor to passengers, but in the regulated transport world it’s a safety and insurance issue — and Waymo treats it exactly that way.
For UK drivers watching this space, it’s another reminder that autonomous taxis won’t be the “free-for-all” some expect. If anything, they may end up being more tightly controlled than human-driven vehicles, with cameras, sensors, and remote staff watching every move.
