A local taxi driver has issued a warning to fellow drivers after being unexpectedly charged while using the free drop-off zone at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The driver, who shared his experience with TikTok user Driver Matty, hopes to prevent others from falling into the same trap.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport offers two main drop-off points: the Express Drop Off, which currently costs £5 for 10 minutes, increasing to £6 in March 2025, and Drop 2, a free drop-off zone allowing up to 20 minutes of free parking. However, what many may not realise is that Drop 2 has a strict two-hour no-return policy.

The taxi driver in question had initially dropped off an airport staff member at Drop 2, assuming they would prefer to avoid paying the express charge. Soon after, he picked up another fare—also an airport staff member—who requested to be dropped at Drop 2 as well. Upon returning to the zone, however, the barrier did not open, and he was instead charged £8 due to the no-return policy.
Frustrated by the unexpected charge, the driver questioned what he should do in future situations—refuse to drop a second passenger at Drop 2 to avoid a fee? The incident has raised concerns among local taxi drivers about the fairness of the rule, particularly for those who regularly transport airport staff.
With drop-off fees set to increase next year, drivers are urged to take extra care when using the free zone to avoid costly penalties. If in doubt, waiting at a nearby location before returning may be an option, though this is not always practical for busy drivers on tight schedules.
Driver Matty shared the story on TikTok to spread awareness, and many drivers are now calling for clearer signage and better communication regarding the no-return rule. Until then, those operating near the airport should plan ahead and be cautious when using Drop 2.
